For 3 years I dreamed of skiing across Greenland. One month ago I fulfilled my dream. I embarked upon this journey because it fit in line with my life purpose. Before leaving for Greenland, this was my purpose:
“To explore and understand the human experience by testing my own limits and testing myself every day of my life. To further explore humanity, I intend to add value to the planet by inspiring people to actualize their dreams and realize the infinite capacity of the human potential. I will experience the farthest end of human suffering and the other extreme of human greatness, for in that I will experience all of humanity. My purpose is to make each individual realize their passions, unleash their inner greatness and taste the joy of a single moment within a human life.”
Today, having grown and learned more about life and myself, my life purpose is “to be.” That’s it. If I had to expand on it, it would be “to be present to the God within me and create a space for others to do the same.”
What do I mean by God?
To me, God is a reflection of humanity at it finest.
So how do you find your life purpose?
Although I believe that there is an inherent unity that exists between all of humanity, nonetheless we are different and our individuality makes us who we are. So remember that for each one of us our purpose is unique. We were not all put on this earth to live out the same dream or the same life. The world would be a very boring place if that was the case, wouldn’t it?
Having said that, from my experience around the world and my work as a success coach, I have found that most people know what their purpose is. They know what they were born to do, but they just don’t do it. Fear of failure, doubt, a perceived lack of resources and even fear of success are a few things that come in the way.
How to conquer those fears will be saved for another day. For right now, we will focus on how to discover your life purpose if you don’t know what it is. To do that, you have to ask yourself the right questions and you have to feel emotional about the answers. Everything we do in life and all the decisions we make are made because of emotional reasons, not rational ones. We are emotional creatures. Even the decisions you think you made by making a list of all the advantages and disadvantages and trying to break it down as rationally as possible, in the end the final trigger was an emotional one. Think about it, am I right?
If you have never thought of your life purpose before reading this, you may find yourself fixing something that is wrong in your life while you are coming up with an answer. Think of purpose as a being thing, not a doing thing. The consequence of having a doing purpose is that when you are not in action, you are not living your purpose. When you think of purpose as a being thing, you can live your purpose every minute of every day. By being your purpose, the resulting possibilities are endless. As Gandhi once said, “be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Here are some questions to ask yourself to get you started on your journey to discover your purpose:
When you ask yourself what your life purpose is, what answer makes you emotional?
As I said, we are emotional creatures. What makes you emotional? What answer changes your very being when you think about it? Emotion will lead you to your purpose.
If success was guaranteed what would you do with your time? What do you love to do?
What do you enjoy doing? What activity silences your mind and puts you into the now? The answer to these questions are doing things, but once you have these answer, ask yourself the question below:
If everything that you loved to do were already done, what would that make possible?
For me, my doing purpose was to understand the human experience and use that understanding to better the human condition. But what if everything was understood and everyone lived their dream, what would that make possible? It would give everyone the opportunity to simply be. I would then just be. What would it make possible for you? Maybe it’s love, maybe it’s creation, maybe it’s connection, maybe it’s joy. What is the being that results when all the doing is done? Keep working on the answer to this question till the answer is no longer a doing thing, but a being thing.
Then BE your purpose.
